I have downloaded and upgraded firmware for the 4688 . Do I have to reformat?

No. but we advise you do. Changes to Firmware can affect the way files are stored to and retrieved from the HDD. If you notice strange operation after a firmware upgrade, you may need to reformat you HDD.
